Educational Prerequisites

Are You curious about how to become a Secret Service Agent? Well, one of the key steps in doing so is fulfilling the educational requirements for the job.

However, before you read any further, you should check whether you meet the basic requirements – you must be a US Citizen, less than 37 years old, in excellent shape, and have 40/20 eyesight.

In order to become a Secret Service Agent, you need a lot of extensive education as well as experience. You must start by earning a high school diploma, and then complete a two-year associate program and a four-year bachelor’s degree. Your bachelor’s should preferably be in the field of law enforcement or criminal justice with electives like pre law, police science, criminology, victimology, etc.

Apart from this, you also need to get hands-on training in any relevant area of work, such as law enforcement, investigation or any other criminal justice department. Next, you should obtain an application for the nearest U.S. Secret Service office, fill it out and return it. As soon as your application is selected, you will be asked to go through a numerous of physical, mental, psychological and written exams; you will also be subjected to a drug test and a polygraph test. Once you clear all of these, you are most likely to be selected and will be sent to an eleven-week long law enforcement training and then an additional 11 weeks at the James J. Rowley Training Center.

Additional Qualifications

You must also be well aware of the expertise and capabilities required for this kind of job. Some of these skills include:

  • Possessing a razor-sharp level of intelligence and IQ
  • The ability to work under stressful conditions
  • Being capable of working at odd hours for an extensive period of time
  • The ability to speak a number of foreign languages
  • Using fire arms and implementing defense mechanism

Duties and Responsibilities

In order to learn how to become a Secret Service Agent, you must also be well aware of their responsibilities as well.

As a Secret Service Agent, you are not only limited to protecting the president, his family and the vice president; you will also be in charge of safeguarding the previous presidents, various foreign ministers and even potential presidential candidates. Plus, you are also in charge of protection against any counterfeiting of US notes or bills. At times, you may also be called in to help out in local investigation cases pertaining to scams, frauds, identity theft, serial killing or other major crimes.
